Job Summary:
Penn State Health Cancer Institute has a new and exciting opportunity available for a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join the Division of Blood and Vascular Disorders to support the Sickle Cell Program. This dedicated Sickle Cell Disease APP will work in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams including Physicians, APPs, nursing, and dosimetry in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as assisting in quality improvement initiatives.
Outpatient Responsibilities:
Assist lead physician with preparing for clinic including reviewing records from referring provider for new patients or records since last seen for return patients
Clinic visits: obtaining histories, placing orders and documentation during clinic visit.
Collaborative Role: APP and lead provider to share discussing and teaching patients regarding the rationale of treatments while in clinic and implementing/prescribing treatments. Education of patients on appropriate use of red cell transfusions, management of iron overload, chronic pain management, recognition and treatment of early renal dysfunction, and VTE prophylaxis/treatment.
First contact for nurse coordinator for daily concerns of this patient population (Justification: provider currently spends up to 2 hours each day on sickle cell patient needs)
Infusion Room: Evaluate patients in infusion room for acute pain crises and bill for these evaluations (Justification: averages 2 to 3 per week in infusion room)
Pain Management: Manage narcotic prescriptions including monitoring refill needs and monitoring urine drug screens and will work to develop a proactive calendar for refill needs
Inpatient Management:
Evaluate patients admitted to the hospital for acute sickle cell crisis within 24-48 hours of admission, on day of discharge and as needed as a consultant and bill for these services (Justification: average of 2 to 4 sickle cell patients are inpatient each week)
QI Projects:
Develop and work with lead physician on QI initiatives for Sickle Cell Clinic and Sickle Cell Population and manage data collection for Data Collection and Reporting Tool (DCRT) for state grant
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
Graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program or baccalaureate or higher degree program that meets licensure requirements in the State of Pennsylvania required.
National Certification in Pennsylvania or in another State with reciprocity and licensure to practice in Pennsylvania required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
